  2. Pass a USPS 8-hr “Boat Smart”safe boating course or equivalent (1)
  3. Can contribute time, energy, and/or skills to the squadron
  4. Pay your prorated dues for the year (we’ll calculate them for you after receiving your application)

  1. Experienced boaters may take the Boating Course Exam at any time
  2. Passing of the final examination for any National Association of Safe Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA)-approved basic boating education course including:
    - Holders of U. S. Coast Guard 6 Pak Licenses and above
    - USPS Squadron Boating Course (8 weeks)
    - Canadian Power Squadron - Boating Course
    - USCGAux - Boating Skills & Seamanship or Sailing & Seamanship Courses
    - American Sailing Assn. - (ASA) Basic Keelboat Sailing Course
    - US Sailing - Basic Keelboat Certification Course
    - US Sailing - Keelboat Instructor Course
    - US Sailing - Small Boat Instructor Course
  3. Passing the USPS home study “Americas Boating Course” or the “Boating Course Video and Plotting Kit”available from 1-888-FOR-USPS or (919) 821-0281
  4. Be a graduate of The Naval Academy, The U. S. Coast Guard Academy, The Merchant Marine Academy, or have a Deck Officer License

Membership Benefits

The United States Power Squadron (USPS) was formed in 1912 as an organization dedicated to education, safety, and boating friendship.  It is the largest non-profit boating organization in the world with about 60,000 members (60/40 power/sail) in 33 districts and 450 local squadrons.  It provides some of the best boating education courses at low costs to members and also discounts to many products and services.  Over 3 million boaters have taken a USPS course!

The Wilmington Power Squadron (WPS) was formed in 1938 and is one of the largest squadrons with about 250 members from Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.   Our members comprise about 70% sail and 30% power boating in the Upper Bay and Delaware waters.  This experienced group shares its knowledge in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to promote safety and skill building both in classrooms and on the water during cruises and raft-ups.  We additionally help promote public safety by performing Vessel Safety Checks, conducting Cooperative Charting to help NOAA keep charts updated, and providing Port Captains to share local knowledge.

Types of Membership

Active Member - provides full membership privileges and responsibilities, which include voting, holding elective or appointed office, serving on and/or chairing a committee, earning a merit mark, attending and participating in meetings and social activities, taking educational courses, paying dues, receiving a copy of the monthly National magazine - ENSIGN, receiving a copy of the monthly Squadron newsletter – THE LUBBER’S LINE and flying the USPS Ensign and APS burgee. Minimum age: 18.

Additional Active Member - one who resides in the same household and is in the same squadron of an active member. This member pays 1/2 the National dues of the active member. This member enjoys all the rights and privileges of an active member. Minimum age: 18.

Family Member - available to members of the family of an active member. This includes the spouse of an active member and all persons related by blood, legal adoption or marriage, who reside with or are dependents of an active member. Family members may attend and participate at all General Meetings of the squadron, but may not vote nor hold elective or appointed office. Family members can take educational courses and attend social functions, but they cannot fly the USPS Ensign or APS burgee and they cannot earn merit marks. Dues for this member are less than those paid by the Additional Active Member. No minimum age.
Note: A husband and wife may both elect to hold an active membership. There must be at least one active member per household.
